Northwest Valley of the Sun, Arizonas premier Retirement Community Sun City West is located northwest of central Phoenix, AZ, about 45 minutes from downtown. A recently completed Freeway system makes it easy access to our Valley of the Sun. Sun City West (SCW), is not really a City as we are located in an unincorporated area of Maricopa County. SCW is a community of about 30,000 residents, developed in 1979-1996 by Del Webb for active adults in a retirement setting (although many residents are not retired!) We enjoy convenient local businesses, a post office, places of worship and a nationally ranked hospital. All of this is in place right now, not promises of things to come. Our low SCW Recreation Center fee (2011-$370 paid annually) allows us unlimited use of 7 exceptional *golf courses, four recreation centers with indoor and outdoor pools, spas, state of the art exercise equipment, our own 30 lane bowling alley, walking track, tennis, pickle ball, lawn bowling, bocce-the list goes on and on. Activities abound in this resort like atmosphere. If you have a passion, there is an organization within SCW just for you! You must come experience this lifestyle to believe all the activities available.
 With more than 300 days of sunshine, we are far away from harsh winters. Our winter temperatures average 65-80 degrees. Our summers are very warm, some residents spend their summers in cooler climates, but many of us have adapted and would rather have 3 months of very warm weather than have to shovel snow or drive on ice! Next door to SCW, the developing community of Surprise includes shopping, movie theaters, restaurants, coffee shops, plus a city center with an exceptional library and an aquatics and athletic complex. A short distance east of Sun City West is Arrowhead Shopping Center offering an inside shopping mall with major retail merchants. Sky Harbor International airport, exclusive Scottsdale shopping, and the beautiful new University of Phoenix stadium, home of the NFL Cardinals, are all short commutes away.
The Phoenix area is noted for its arts, museums, theaters and cultural activities. Arizona State University is located in Tempe (South of Phoenix) and Arizona State University - West is located on the West side of Phoenix (Glendale) plus Community Colleges dot the county, SCW has its own Lifelong Learning program in partnership with the Arizona State University, with classes right here in SCW.
 Nearby communities in the West Valley are the home for baseball spring training for several Major League teams. Next to the new ?University of Phoenix stadium (location of the 2008 Super Bowl) is ?Jobing.com Arena, home of the NHL Coyotes. Beautiful Lake Pleasant with fishing, sailing and boating pleasures is just minutes away. Two hours north, you will find the spectacular red rock country of Sedona. Only a short drive further to Flagstaff, gateway to the Grand Canyon and magnificent Lake Powell. Two hours south is Tucson with the University of Arizona and its arts, rodeo, festivals and varied cultures. If you need and ocean fix; Just 4 1/2 hours south is Puerto Penasco (Rocky Point), Sonora, Mexico, located on the north shore of the Sea of Cortez.
